WHAT IS STATHELP? WHAT'S ON THE DISK?
======================================
There are three self-contained programs that together make up the
STATHELP package. They are:
1. WATSTAT -- A computerized STATISTICAL CONSULTANT that advises you on
what statistical procedures to use. It first asks you a series of
questions about your data, design, and analytical focus. Then, it
displays a report advising you on what descriptive statistics and
significance tests are likely to meet your needs. Optionally, this
advisory report can be sent to your printer. A tutorial is provided
for first-time users and HELP WINDOWS can be popped up whenever you
need assistance. (We wanted to call this program "WHATSTAT," but
someone else has already used that name.)
2. LOOKUP -- A program that calculates probabilities ("p-values) for five
different statistical tests: z, t, F, Chi-Square, and the Binomial.
LOOKUP replaces the tables found in the back of most statistics text-
books and is more extensive than most such tables.
3. RANDO -- A program that generates several types of random numbers that
can be used for random sampling, running simulations, randomly assign-
ing experimental treatments, or even playing lotteries.
It generates: 1) Uniformly distributed integers ranging between
user-specified minimum and maximum values; 2) Uniformly distributed
decimals ranging from 0.0 to 1.0; 3) Normally distributed numbers with
Mean=0.0 and SD=1.0; 4) Normally distributed numbers with any Mean and
Standard Deviation you specify; 5) random 1's and 0's with any user-
specified proportion of 1's; 6) randomized orders of integers ranging
from 1 to N, with maximum N=20; 7) "standard" lottery numbers, as used
in "Lotto" games; and 8) "Pick N" lottery numbers, where numbers range
from 0 to 9 and where duplications are allowed.
All three STATHELP programs are menu-driven and provide help
messages to guide every operation. If you have an EGA or VGA color
monitor, menus and windows are displayed in a variety of colors.
Some familiarity with statistical terms and concepts is required
to use these programs appropriately, but if you've had an introductory
course in statistics you should have little difficulty with them.
"Quick start" information about running these programs is provided
later in this README.1ST file. More complete operating instructions
are provided in a text file called SHMANUAL.DOC, which will be copied
to the disk you specify when you install the STATHELP programs, as
explained below.
You're probably anxious to install and run STATHELP, and we're just
as anxious to have you try it out. But please take a few more moments to
peruse the next few sections, which briefly explain about the shareware
distribution system and the shareware version of STATHELP. This material
is repeated in the user's manual (SHMANUAL.DOC)) mentioned above, so if
you can't pause to read it now, you should read it in the manual.

ABOUT SHAREWARE, THE ASP, AND THE ASP OMBUDSMAN
===============================================
Shareware is a distribution method that gives you a chance to try
out and evaluate software before buying it. If you find that the software
meets your needs, and if you continue to use it after a reasonable
evaluation period, you are expected to REGISTER with the author and pay a
set fee. Shareware authors get no compensation from the distributors of
their software; they are paid for their work only through registration
fees. And shareware will continue to exist only if users support it.
Hawkeye Softworks is a member of the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP), an association for shareware authors and distributors,
whose goals are to set standards for the shareware system and to educate
its members and the public about shareware. ASP maintains an Ombudsman
office to mediate disputes between ASP members and their customers, and
has published the following statement regarding its Ombudsman service:
The ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle works for
you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related problem with
an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to
help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem
with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for members'
products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road,
Muskegan, MI, 49442, or send a CompuServe message via CompuServe mail
to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.

ABOUT THE SHAREWARE VERSION OF STATHELP
=======================================
The STATHELP programs on this disk are Shareware programs. Whether
or not you register, you may make multiple copies these programs and
distribute them freely to friends, user groups, computer bulletin boards,
etc., so long as the following conditions are met:
1. Anyone distributing the STATHELP programs for any kind of remuneration
must first contact Hawkeye Softworks, at the address given below, for
authorization. This authorization will be granted automatically to
distributors recognized by The Association of Shareware Professionals
as adhering to its guidelines, and such distributors may begin
offering STATHELP immediately. However, they must still notify
Hawkeye Softworks, to ensure that they are supplied with the latest
version of STATHELP.
2. The programs must be distributed in unaltered form; program names
must not changed; and copyright notices must not be removed.
3. The file you are now reading, called README.1ST, and the file called
SHMANUAL.DOC, must be distributed, in unaltered form, along with the
programs. If STATHELP is distributed in compressed form, as you
received it, the three files called SHZIPARC.EXE, SINSTALL.BAT, and
README.1ST must all be distributed together, in unaltered form.
We encourage you to pass copies of STATHELP to your friends for evaluation.
When you do, please encourage them to register their copies if they intend
to use them regularly.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
========================
In accord with the Shareware concept, this version of the STATHELP
package gives you the opportunity to try WATSTAT, LOOKUP, and RANDO at
nominal cost. If you find that you like them and continue to use them,
please print and fill out the REGISTRATION FORM provided at the end of
this file and send it along with the Registration fee of $20 in U.S.
dollars (or $10 if you are an enrolled student) to Hawkeye Softworks,
at the address given on the REGISTRATION FORM.
Registered users will receive:
1. The next update/revision of the STATHELP programs, as soon as
available. (We expect to produce updates, with major enhancements,
about once per year.) The next version of WATSTAT will provide
references to standard textbooks where you can find more information
about the procedures it recommends. The next LOOKUP will optionally
report "critical values" for probabilities you specify and report
proportions under the Normal curve between any two ordinates. The
next RANDO will optionally send output to a file and allow you
to merge RANDO output with your own data file.
2. A USER'S MANUAL for the revised version, containing a Glossary of all
the statistical terms you'll need, as well as explaining how to use
all the features of the STATHELP programs. (If you'd also like a
laser-printed manual for your current version of STATHELP, which is
the same as the SHMANUAL.DOC file that is supplied with the shareware
version of STATHELP, just circle "YES" on the Registration Form.)
3. Free technical support, by mail or Fax, for a full year from the date
your Registration is received.
4. Notices of new products from Hawkeye Softworks, at special discount
prices for registered STATHELP users.

INSTALL NOW?
============
Installation instructions begin in the next section. We suggest that
you merely skim them now, to get a general idea of what's involved,
and then print a hard copy of this README.1ST file, so the instructions
will be at your fingertips when you begin the installation. To print this
file, type:
PRINT README.1ST (then press the [ENTER])

=========================
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
=========================
The STATHELP programs CANNOT be run from the distribution disk.
They're compressed into a single archive file called SHZIPARC.EXE, and
must be decompressed (Installed) before they can be run.
For the curious: the name SHZIPARC.EXE is an acronym for STATHELP
(SH) ZIP ARCHIVE (ZIPARC). It was created with PKWARE's archive
program PKZIP and converted to a self-extracting archive with their
ZIP2EXE program. Because it's an EXE file, SHZIPARC executes (extracts
its own archived files) when you type its name. BUT DON'T DO THAT
YOURSELF. We've provided a special installation program that executes
SHZIPARC for you. Please read on.
You should first make a backup copy of the distribution disk, using
DOS's DISKCOPY command. Then, put the distribution disk in a safe place
and use the backup for the installation procedure.
The STATHELP programs require a total of about 470K bytes of disk
space once they're decompressed, so they can all be installed on a
single 3.5" or High Density 5.25" diskette. But you should install
them on a hard disk if you have one, because they'll run much faster
that way. If your computer has no hard drive and has only one or two
360K floppy drives, skip down to the special instructions given in the
section called "INSTALLING STATHELP ON 360K FLOPPY DRIVES."
The simplest way to install the STATHELP programs is to use the
install batch file, called SINSTALL.BAT, which is supplied on the
distribution disk. Put the backup disk you've just made into a
diskette drive and make that drive "active" by typing the appropriate
drive name. For example, if you want to install from drive A:, type:
A: (and press the [ENTER] key).
Then run SINSTALL by typing a command of the following form:
SINSTALL FROM_DRIVE TO_DRIVE TO_DIRECTORY
For example, if you want to install FROM the A: Drive TO the C: Drive,
in a TO_DIRECTORY called STATHELP, you'd type:
SINSTALL A: C: \STATHELP
Then, SINSTALL will take care of all the installation details for you.
It will catch most errors you may make and tell you how to correct
them. If you forget any of the instructions given here, simply type
SINSTALL, without any drive or directory names, and you'll get an on-
screen synopsis on how to use the SINSTALL program.
Always type a colon (:) after drive letters (e.g., A:) and type a
backslash (\) preceding directory names (e.g., \STATHELP).
If you're installing TO a hard drive, the STATHELP programs are
always copied to a directory. If the TO_DIRECTORY you specify does not
exist, it'll be created for you. If you don't specify a TO_DIRECTORY,
Page 6
a directory with the default name, \STATHELP, will be created. You may
specify a new directory to be nested under one that already exists; for
example, you may specify \UTILS\STATHELP, where \UTILS already exists
and \STATHELP is new sub-directory within it.
If you're installing TO a floppy disk, you need not specify a
TO_DIRECTORY. If you do, SINSTALL will simply ignore it.
If you're installing FROM a floppy disk, SINSTALL will not allow
you to install TO the same disk; e.g., you can't install FROM A: TO A:.
INSTALL NOW?
------------
You should now have all the information you need to proceed with
the installation. But first, you should at least skim the remainder of
this file to see what it contains. Then, you'll know where to find help
if you encounter problems, want to modify the installation, or need
information about running the STATHELP programs.
WHAT IF THE INSTALL PROGRAM WON'T WORK?
---------------------------------------
If, after repeated tries, you can't get SINSTALL to work, you may
be able to do the installation yourself, according to the instructions
given below.
IF YOU HAVE A HARD DRIVE
First create a directory, e.g., \STATHELP, with DOS's MD command.
Then change to that directory with the CD command and COPY all the
files from the backup distribution disk to your new directory. Then,
without changing directories, type:
SHZIPARC (and press the [ENTER] key).
If this doesn't work, chances are that the self-extracting archive
file, SHZIPARC.EXE has been damaged. If it does work, you can delete
SHZIPARC.EXE from the hard disk, since you'll have no further need for it.
Use DOS's ERASE or DEL commands to delete SHZIPARC.EXE.
IF YOU HAVE NO HARD DRIVE, BUT HAVE A 3.5" OR HIGH DENSITY 5.25" DRIVE
First copy SHZIPARC.EXE from the backup distribution disk to a blank
disk on this Drive. Make this Drive the "Active" Drive, by typing its
name from the DOS command line, and then type:
SHZIPARC (and press the [ENTER] key).
If you get a "Disk Full" error, delete all the STATHELP files that
SHZIPARC decompressed before the error occurred, since they may have
been corrupted. Then, follow the instructions given for 360K floppies
in the next section.
If this installation was successful, you may want to delete
SHZIPARC.EXE from the disk, so you'll have enough room to copy this
README.1ST to it.
INSTALLING STATHELP ON 360K FLOPPY DRIVES
-----------------------------------------
Before proceeding with the installation explained below, consider
asking someone who has a hard disk to install STATHELP on their machine
Page 7
and to copy the files to 360K disks for you. Copy all files beginning
with "W" to one floppy disk and all remaining files to a second. (All
"W" files must be on the same disk in order to run WATSTAT.) Then, you
can run WATSTAT from the first disk and LOOKUP and RANDO from the
second. This is the easier way, but it's not much more difficult to
install directly to 360K floppies, as shown below.
Because the self-executing archive file, SHZIPARC.EXE, allows you
to install one file at a time, you should be able to decompress all the
files on 360K drives.
IF YOU HAVE TWO 360K FLOPPY DRIVES
Put the backup distribution disk in Drive A: and a blank diskette in
Drive B:. Make B: the "Active" Drive, by typing B: from the DOS
command line. Then, type:
A:SHZIPARC W*.* (and press the [ENTER] key).
This will decompress and copy all the WATSTAT files, those beginning
with "W," to your B: Drive. Now, put a new blank diskette in the B:
and type:
A:SHZIPARC LOOKUP.EXE (and press the [ENTER] key).
Wait for LOOKUP.EXE to be installed on B:, and then type:
A:SHZIPARC RANDO.EXE (and press the [ENTER] key).
Wait for RANDO.EXE to be installed on B:, and then type:
A:SHZIPARC SHMANUAL.DOC (and press the [ENTER] key).
Now, you're ready to run the STATHELP programs. Run WATSTAT from the
first diskette and LOOKUP and RANDO from the second.
IF YOU HAVE ONLY ONE 360K FLOPPY DRIVE
You'll need to extract the STATHELP files one at a time, and copy
each file to another disk before extracting the next. To do this,
you'll need to know the names of all the files in the archive, so write
down the eight file names listed below, and be sure to spell them
exactly as given.
WATSTAT.EXE WATSTAT.TXT WATSTAT.HLP WATSTAT.INX
WATUT.EXE LOOKUP.EXE RANDO.EXE SHMANUAL.DOC
Have 3 blank, formatted disks ready, and label them "Disk1,"
"Disk2", and "Disk3." Put the backup distribution disk in Drive A: and
copy the archive file to Disk1 by typing:
COPY SHZIPARC.EXE B: (and press the [ENTER] key).
When DOS tells you, "Insert diskette for drive B: and strike any key
when ready," replace the distribution disk with Disk1 and press a key.
When it's finished copying, DOS will tell you to re-insert the
distribution disk. And, if your computer has little memory, DOS may
tell you to exchange disks again. When the copying is finished, insert
Disk1 into the drive. Then, follow the 3 steps given below.
Page 8
STEP 1 -- Extract the first file from the archive by typing:
SHZIPARC WATSTAT.EXE (and press the [ENTER] key).
STEP 2 -- With Disk1 still in the Drive, type:
COPY WATSTAT.EXE B: (and press the [ENTER] key).
When DOS tells you to "Insert diskette for drive B: ...," replace Disk1
with Disk2, and WATSTAT.EXE will be copied to Disk2. When this is
done, remove Disk2 and insert Disk1.
STEP 3 -- Delete WATSTAT.EXE from Disk1 by typing:
DEL WATSTAT.EXE (and press the [ENTER] key).
Now, you're ready to extract the next file. Repeat the above three
steps, but substitute the name of the second file, WATSTAT.TXT,
wherever the name WATSTAT.EXE is used above.
Repeat the above three steps for the remaining files whose names
begin with "W." When this is done, Disk2 will contain all the files
needed to run WATSTAT. Label it appropriately and set it aside.
Then extract the remaining files to Disk3 by repeating the above
three steps, each time substituting the appropriate file name wherever
"WATSTAT.EXE" is used. When this is done, Disk3 will contain all the
files needed to run LOOKUP and RANDO, and will also contain the manual
file, SHMANUAL.DOC. Label Disk3 appropriately, and you're finished
with the installation.
CHANGING THE INSTALLATION FOR LOOKUP (FOR HARD DISKS ONLY)
----------------------------------------------------------
The above installation is suitable at the outset, until you get
familiar with the STATHELP programs. But later you'll find that one of
the programs, LOOKUP, should be installed elsewhere: it's designed as a
quick reference tool, and is handiest when it can be popped up from any
directory you happen to be working in. This means that the file called
LOOKUP.EXE should be moved to a directory that is on your SEARCH PATH.
If you don't know which directories are on your SEARCH PATH, type
"PATH" (without quotes) from the DOS command line. This will show you
a list of directories that DOS searches when you try to run a program
that isn't in the current directory.
If you have a directory where you store miscellaneous utility
programs and batch files, that would be the ideal place for LOOKUP. If
there is no other appropriate directory on your SEARCH PATH, you may
want to put LOOKUP in the root directory of your hard drive.
Once you've decided where to move LOOKUP, change to that directory
with the CD command and copy LOOKUP.EXE to that directory with the
COPY command . For example, to copy from a directory "\STATHELP" on
the C: drive, type:
COPY C:\STATHELP\LOOKUP.EXE (and press the [ENTER] key).
At this point you'll have two copies of LOOKUP.EXE on your hard
disk, and you'll want to remove the extra copy from your original
TO_Directory. Go to that directory with the DOS CD command and delete
the extra copy of LOOKUP.EXE with DOS's DEL or ERASE commands.
Page 9
PLEASE NOTE: The remaining STATHELP programs, WATSTAT and RANDO,
should be kept where you originally installed them. WATSTAT must
access a number of subsidiary files, and it must be run from the
directory that contains all its files. On the other hand, RANDO may be
moved to another directory, but it's probably best to keep it where you
originally installed it, so you'll always remember where to find it.
===========================================
RUNNING THE STATHELP PROGRAMS (Quick Start)
===========================================
To run any one of the STATHELP programs, simply type its name:
WATSTAT (and press the [ENTER] key), or
LOOKUP (and press the [ENTER] key), or
RANDO (and press the [ENTER] key).
FOR HARD DISK USERS -- If the STATHELP programs are stored in a
directory that is not the "active" ("default") directory, you'll need
to go to that directory with DOS's CD command before typing a program
name. (If you moved LOOKUP to a directory on the SEARCH PATH, as
described in the preceding section, you can run LOOKUP from any drive
or directory on your system LOOKUP.)
The best way to learn about WATSTAT is to select "Run Tutorial"
from its MENU. The tutorial takes only about 10 minutes, but tells you
all you need to know about running WATSTAT.
The best way to learn about LOOKUP and RANDO is simply by running
them: after 15 minutes or so, you should be quite proficient.
For more details on running the STATHELP programs, consult the
manual file, SHMANUAL.DOC. It can be read by any text editor or word
processor or sent to your printer with the DOS PRINT command.
Page 10
The form below is for your convenience in registering. Just print it on a
dot-matrix printer, fill it out, and send it along with $20 in US dollars
($10 for currently enrolled students) to the address given on the form.
If you can't print the form, a hand-drawn facsimile will do.

When registering, feel free to include comments about the STATHELP
programs and suggestions for improving them. If you are an instructor
or student in a statistics course, please send information about your
textbook, so we can include references to it in the next version of
WATSTAT. User input will guide further development of the STATHELP
programs and, we hope, lead to new programs to be added to the package.
Whether or not you register, please also report any bugs you may
find and provide as much detail as you can about them. That is, besides
describing symptoms of a bug, explain what you were doing just before
it occurred, whether it always occurs under certain conditions, what
brand and model of computer and printer you have, what DOS version
you're using, and what other software (particularly TSR's) may have
been in your computer's memory at the time. If possible, print copies
of your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files and send those too.
